Appreciate Differences

Everyone is unique, and it’s true that men tend to focus on logic and details whereas women tend to focus on emotion and feeling. This is the cause of many arguments. Appreciate that your partner is different from you and don’t expect them to see things as you do.

Listen without arguing

Identify Feelings and Needs

Help your partner to connect to what they feel and need by asking exploratory questions. Eg. ”Are you feeling …”, or “Are you needing….?

Include Your Own feelings and Needs

When it’s your turn to speak use ‘I’ statements to express what you feel and need without blaming your partner for how you feel. It’s the difference between expressing yourself and shaming someone else.

Reach an Agreement Together

After taking the time to express what you are feeling and needing, explore together, “What can we do to get both our needs met?” rather than arguing rights and wrongs.

Avoid Being Drawn in

If your partner is trying to engage you in an argument over “who is right?”, stay focused on helping them express their feelings and needs.
